3 Tips To Find A Good Plumber

If you’re like most people these days, you choose to try the DIY method when it comes to things like fixing leaky faucets or replacing the seal on a toilet. It can be a cost-effective alternative to hiring a plumber to do the job. But sometimes you can find yourself in over your head. Unfortunately, plumbing problems are a part of life, and there will most definitely come a time when you have a plumbing issue that you just can’t fix yourself. When those issues arise, you’ll want to have the name and number on hand of a trustworthy plumbing company to call, especially in the case of an emergency. So how do you go about finding a good plumber that you can trust to get the job done? The following three tips will guide you on your way

1. Ask Around

To start, you should ask your friends, family, and neighbors for recommendations. This is the best way to weed out the good plumbers from the not-so-good plumbers. The magic number you’re looking for here is generally three – meaning, if you hear the same name come up three times or more during your search, you’ve just struck gold. Make a list of all the plumbers’ names that have been recommended to you.

Once you have at least two or three plumbers to choose from, you can move on to the next step to help you narrow that list down even further.

2. Research

When you have a list of plumbers, the next thing you should do is research them. Researching each plumber will help you decide which one is going to be the best fit to suit your needs. There are several things you should look at when deciding on which plumber to hire. If the plumbing company has a website, most of the following information should be listed there. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for on their website, or if they don’t have a website, give them a call and speak to someone over the phone who can answer any questions you have.

  1. Services Offered – Some plumbers only do things like unclogging drains and toilets and don’t offer installation services. Other plumbers specialize in one or more areas of plumbing and can do things like replace broken pipes, install new water systems, and things of that nature. You want to hire a plumber who is going to be able to help you with the plumbing services you need to have performed.
  1. Licensing and Insurance – Reputable plumbing companies will be licensed and insured, which protects both their business and you as a homeowner. For instance, if a plumber performs work in your home and makes a mistake that causes your home to flood, their insurance will cover their business as well as any damage that occurred in your home as a result of their negligence.
  2. Experience and Length of Time in Business – While you shouldn’t look at these factors and base your decision solely on them, it’s still important to know how long the business has been around and how many years of experience the plumber has under his belt. While there’s nothing that says a new plumbing business can’t be just as great as the one that’s been around for a decade or more, it’s going to be easier to find people who can vouch for the older business and let you know if they are a good business to work with. If a plumbing company has been around for a decade or more, there’s probably a good reason for that – they are a good and reputable company.
  3. Get and Compare Quotes – The best way to go about getting an accurate estimate of how much the services you need performed are going to cost is to call several plumbers and explain what you need them to do. Some plumbers might give you a rough estimate of the costs over the phone, but to get the most accurate quote, they’ll likely need to come to your home to see for themselves what the project entails. Especially for larger projects, they’ll need to make a list of the materials they might need and determine the amount of time it will take to complete. Once you have a few different quotes, you can compare those quotes along with the other information you’ve researched to determine which plumber to hire.

3. Communication

It’s important that the plumbing company you hire has good communication and puts their customers’ needs first. If you give the companies you’re considering a call, you’ll probably be able to tell right away if they’re lacking in the communication area. You should be their number one priority while you’re on the phone with them. If you request a callback, they should return your call promptly. They should be willing to answer any questions you may have and they should do so with patience. You can also judge how well the communication is when the plumber arrives to give a quote. You can look at how prompt he is, if he clearly informs you of the problems he sees, what needs to be done to fix them, and how much the project will cost.

When plumbing issues arise in your home or business, it’s good to have the name and number of a respectable and conscientious plumber that you can call. With these tips, you’ll be able to find one in your area.
